April 19, 2005
DHL UAE is helping fund this year’s Gulf 4 Good’s (G4G) ‘In the Footsteps of Lawrence’ seven day sponsored trek, from the Dead Sea to the ancient city of Petra, to raise cash for rural schools and hospitals in Palestine and Jordan.
The trek will see nine participants set out from the lowest point in the world, at Wadi Ibn Hammed on the Dead Sea, and follow the old camel caravan route to finish the G4G Challenge at the Wadi Rum region near Petra, which is known as the Valley of the Moon because of its dramatic coloured mountains.
DHL UAE also supported the first ‘In the Footsteps of Lawrence’ challenge last year, which raised US$ 21,047 for emergency room equipment for Qalqilia Hospital in Palestine and US$ 15,843 to support schools across Jordan.
David Wild, General Manager DHL UAE, said: “DHL is involved in a number of Gulf-wide charities and we have built a strong relationship with G4G and supported it in raising funds for both local and international causes.
“We like to ensure that money is properly allocated and G4G achieves this through its close association with the Queen Noor Al Hussein Foundation in Jordan and the Healthworks Committee in Palestine.”
Funds raised from this year’s event will again be divided between projects benefiting disadvantaged groups in Palestine and Jordan.
Paul Oliver, G4G’s Charity Director, said: “The exact level of donation will be finalised when all the sponsorship money has been donated. We set a minimum AED 12,000 sponsorship target for each participant but many challengers raise more than this.”
G4G was established in 2001 and operates under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Emirates Group and President of the Department of Civil Aviation, Government of Dubai.
G4G challenges have seen more than 200 people of 30 nationalities participate , raising in excess of AED 2 million. Activities have included trekking, cycling and kayaking in Morrocco, Egypt, India, Tanzania, Thailand, Nepal, the UAE and Jordan.
