30 December 2007, Dubai (UAE) - With high standards of aesthetics and more liberal attitudes concerning facial and body rejuvenation surgery, many men are now seeking the benefits of aesthetic surgery procedures. Surging 100 per cent in the UAE to 5000 men since 2005, surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), hair transplantation and liposuction remain popular among men; recent trends show that more men are considering plastic surgery than ever before. The most sought after plastic surgery procedures for men worldwide are liposuction -also up 100 per cent to 182 men since 2005- and gynecomastia (liposuction of the breast) according to figures supplied by Dr. Toledo, one of the leading certified professional plastic surgeons in Dubai. Dr. Toledo highlights that the men opting for surgery are not lazy but are simply not getting the results they desire from diet and exercise. The typical request involves liposculpture of the back and the flanks and abdomen, otherwise known as the "spare tire”. “There are limits to what men can achieve through exercise depending on their body type and bone structure. The result from aesthetic surgery is then the reward for all that hard work they have put in with their exercise and diet regime," said Dr. Toledo. They're exercising, they've quit smoking and they're eating more healthy foods. But men who end up in the plastic surgeon's chair often say they don't think they look as good as they feel, according to Dr. Toledo. While the jump in demand isn't unique to the gender, Dr. Toledo adds that this shows the modern mans desire to boost his looks “Men are more conscious now, they have more disposable income, especially young men, and opting for an aesthetic procedure is not looked down upon anymore. Even nationals are changing their thoughts on procedures; nearly half of the men who opted for surgery are locals.” Doctor Toledo has pioneered new liposuction techniques to achieve a more athletic appearance for his male patients. Liposculpture involves a small incision made in the skin just large enough to accommodate a small hollow tube called a cannula – one of which bears his name. The “Toledo tip” cannula, which is coated with Zirconium, allows for less friction and a smoother removal of fat from selected areas of the body to create the desired contour. Abdominal etching (revealing the `six pack`) is a sought after procedure, along with liposculpture of the fatty neck to give a more manly jaw line. These procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, usually under local anesthesia with sedation. The patient is able to return to work in three to five days and resume sporting activities in 3-4 weeks. Dr. Toledo advises patients to search for a surgeon who is a certified member of a plastic surgery association, so that the patient can feel confident that the doctor has undergone strict training as a reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon.
