March 14, 2009
Country: Swaziland
Client(s):
Students from five GEMS schools and an external guest school participated in Model United Nations Conference, hosted by GEMS Wellington International School. The two-day conference was modelled on the operations of United Nations, featuring committees with delegates representing the world’s nations and debating resolutions on the most important issues facing the world today. The Model United Nations debated a number of key issues such as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan and their relation to internal security, and the conflict situation in Darfur, Sudan. The conference event was jointly led by GEMS Wellington International School and The Winchester School, with participation of students from both of the schools, in addition to students from Cambridge International School, Dubai American Academy, Jumeirah College and the guest school, Deira International School. Geoff Turner, Executive Principal and CEO of GEMS Wellington International School said the event was in line with the school’s commitment to inculcate the GEMS core values of World Citizenship, Universal Values, Leadership Qualities and Forward Thinking. He said: “Model United Nations Conference is an inspiring and transformational educational experience that gave our children the opportunity to have a better understanding of key social and global issues. By involving students in humanitarian causes, the youth of today can significantly contribute towards world peace.” Annmarie Shreier, a 17-year old student from Wellington International School said: “The conference was a unique experience for us as it helped increase our awareness on many important issues facing the world today through thorough meaningful debates. It also enabled us to study the issues and propose solutions, which are an expression of our viewpoints.” All delegates received certificates and customised feedback on their performance from the Model United Nations Committee Directors.
