Water has become the key commodity of the 21st century. One of the critical challenges that hinders sustainable development in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries is the lack of renewable water resources. This relative scarcity of water together with a surge in population in the Middle East has made dealing with wastewater a high priority for regional governments.
The vital importance of reusing wastewater in the region was recently addressed in the opening speech of Wastewater Tech 2009 by Eng. Abdullah Rashid Al Moalla, Executive Director for Water Resources and Nature Conservation, Ministry of Environment & Water, UAE on behalf of H.E. Dr. Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water: “The issue of reusing wastewater has gained much importance in the past years due to the steady increase of population on one hand and the sharp shortage of fresh water all round the world on the other hand. In several countries of the world, reusing water has become a fundamental part of the adopted solutions to the water resources severe shortage in these countries.
