Iran executes 11 for murder, drug trafficking

Iran has hanged four people convicted of murder in Tehran and five convicted of drug trafficking in the southern city of Kerman, local media reported on Thursday.

Vatan Emrooz newspaper reported that three men and a woman convicted of murder were sent to the gallows in Tehran's Evin prison on Wednesday.

The report identified the men as Hamid Mohammadi, Safarali Nassiri, Hosseinali Robatseyli and the woman as Zeynab Nazarzadeh.

Fars news agency also reported that five drug traffickers were hanged in a prison in Kerman, without specifying when they were executed.

The latest hangings bring to at least 94 the number of people executed in the Islamic republic so far this year, according to a count by news agency AFP, compared with 246 in 2008.

Rights group Amnesty International has said that Iran applied the death penalty more than any other country apart from China in 2007, executing 335 people.

Tehran says it uses the death penalty is a bid to improve security in society.
