Sharjah emiratisation drive complete failure

A drive to recruit Emiratis as taxi drivers in Sharjah has received no applicants, officials say, dealing a major blow to the UAE's efforts to provide more jobs for its citizens.

The attempt to recruit Emiratis as taxi drivers - with the promise of higher wages - received interest from one person who decided to not to apply, saying he would remain unemployed until a better job came along, UAE daily the National reported on Sunday.

“We admit this whole campaign was a complete failure,” Mohammed al-Shamsi, chairman of the Sharjah Public Transport Corp (SPTC) told the Sharjah Consultative Council.

“We have tried several times, and I will tell you that we shall continue trying.”

All of the nearly 20,000 taxi drivers in Sharjah are expats from Pakistan, Egypt, Syria, Bangladesh, Nepal and the Philippines.

The UAE government is encouraging employers to recruit locals over expats as many among the local population remain unemployed.

“It is dangerous to put the emirate’s whole transport sector in the hands of just one nationality,” Shamsi said. “Imagine if there is a problem with such a nationality. The whole public transport services would crumble.”

But he said that about three in four administrative jobs at the SPTC were held by Emiratis.

Is this for a UAE reality TV show? I believe it will be difficult for Shj Govt to ask locals for the post as most of them really want to be something especially the young ones. I think this is something interesting for them if they really want to try, especially the unemployed and did not pursue a study. The govt should already look into the possibility of giving applicants psychological tests before being hired as drivers. We as passengers would want to be sure also as these drivers are carrying our lives in the taxi cabs.

This is a joke? Have you tried asking Emirati students what would they like when they graduate? They would tell you a Manager the least! A taxi driver for them might be degrading, they might join but as a "Manager" nothing more nothing less!

The question is why? A. Locals are lazy B. The job is not well paid enough C. It does not have enough prestige D. It is not conducive to Emirati life E. There are better options elsewhere Personally I am not really that surprised by this. It is clear there are better options for nationals, and government aid is sufficient generous and protective to make working log, hard unsociable hours unnecessary. Take away the soft touch and you would see a different story.
