BREAKING NEWS | Dozens stranded atop Burj Khalifa

Gulf Air, Bahrain's national carrier, Thursday said Samer Majali will replace Bjorn Naf as the carrier's chief executive.

Majali, the former chief executive of Royal Jordanian, will assume the role in the next few months, the airline said in an emailed statement.

Until then, Gulf Air Chairman Talal al-Zain will manage the business in the temporary position of executive chairman, it said.

"Moving forward, we have important plans for the future of Gulf Air and we believe Samer is the right leader to take the airline forward as we move into the next phase of our strategy to rebuild the business," Zain said in the statement.

In recent months, Naf has come under pressure from Bahraini members of parliament to step down as chief executive.

Last month, MPs sent an official letter to Zain requesting that Naf was replaced.

MPs have postponed a probe into alleged corruption at Gulf Air until later this year to avoid shaking public confidence during the peak summer months, Gulf Daily News reported last month.

Up to seven expatriate officials at the airline could be questioned over alleged corruption and mismanagement, the daily reported.
