DUBAI - Qatar has toughened up its rental laws to make it more difficult for landlords to evict tenants, local daily the Peninsula reported on Monday.

Under the amendment to the rent law, landlords can now only ask a tenant to vacate a property if it is needed for personal use, the newspaper reported.

The law also states landlords must give a tenant six months notice to vacate a property, the paper said.

Doha’s real estate market is facing a massive oversupply and as many as one in five homes could be empty by 2010, according to a report by property service firm Engel and Volkers Commercial.

Rents and sale prices in the Qatari capital have seen double-digit declines over the past 12 months as the market suffers at the hands of the global recession.
