Shaikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Head of the Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife (the Commission).
Today, more than ever, education on changing individual behavior towards the Environment is needed to face the growing pressures from climate change. The pace and scale of climate change may now be outstripping even the most sobering predictions of scientists. Humans are one of the species of life who are affected by human activities impact on the environment that cause 150 to 200 of species extinction every 24 hours.
This year’s theme for the campaign is “CHANGING BEHAVIOUR TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENT” and is held under the patronage of H.H. Shaikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Head of the Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife (the Commission),
ROWA’s Regional Director, Dr. Habib El Habr, said, “UNEP/ROWA is pleased to support activities that raise environmental awareness in the region and particularly in Bahrain our host country. This environmental event is an important platform to deliver effective messages on best practices in the shipping industry to enhance Corporate Social Responsibility while sustaining a better environment for future generations. This collaboration is a demonstration of UNEP/ROWA’s commitment to promoting partnerships with organizations responding to economic as well as environmental sustainability needs in the region”.
The workshop discussed UNEP’s actions and cooperation programmes tackling global and regional environmental challenges and highlight the resulting biodiversity loss from human activities especially in marine ecosystems as it deeply relates to the Gulf region and will be held at ASRY’s training center for their production staff.
UNEP’s expert on biodiversity conservation, Mrs. Diane Klaimi, said, “Shipping yards present a great pollution threat on marine habitats. Some simple housekeeping behaviors in the workplace and respecting national and international environmental regulations on waste management in the waters and in the ports can make a difference.
In addition, protecting marine biodiversity is an important step towards reversing climate change. We hope to bring global initiatives on top of UNEP’s agenda to the attention and benefit of the region” she added.
Mrs.Zahraa Taher, CEO and Founder of Eventscom commended ASRY’s initiative in taking the lead in raising awareness and tackling environmental concerns, and encouraged other organizations follow suit.
