Saudi Arabia’s food consumption to rise 10.9 per cent through 2013

October 28, 2009
Country: Saudi Arabia
Client(s):

Saudi Arabia’s estimated annual population growth of 2.5 percent is expected to push food consumption by 10.9 per cent through 2013. The hike in consumption will be driven mainly by youth less than 30 years old who comprise around 70 percent of the population and who are particularly fond of fast food. Saudi Arabia currently accounts for 75 per cent of fast food consumption in the Gulf and is the site of 29 of the 60 fast food factories in the region.

Aside from the population boom, the rapid growth of Saudi Arabia’s food processing and packaging industry has also been fueled by the rising incomes, more affluent lifestyles, and steady development in Saudi Arabia amidst the global economic downturn. Food and drink companies are constantly searching for the latest technologies and products to meet the needs of a consumer base that will exceed 40 million in the next 20 years. Saudi Arabia imports over SAR18.8 billion worth of food and beverage products a year to supplement local production. The upcoming Saudi Agro-Food 2009 - The 16th international trade show for food products, processing and packaging technologies, will offer various options for supporting this burgeoning business.

“Food security is a priority for Saudi Arabia, which is why it has been aggressively expanding its arable areas and inviting foreign firms with advanced food preparation, handling and processing capabilities. As the population continues to expand, the people’s food demands will follow suit in terms of supply, quality and diversity. The Saudi Agro-Food 2009 show will display tools and techniques that can help meet these needs,” said Khalid Daou, Project Manager of Saudi Agro-Food at Riyadh Exhibitions Company.

Saudi Agro-Food 2009 will feature the latest products, technologies and services in areas ranging from frozen and chilled foods, confectionery, chocolates, health and natural foods, to presentation, processing and packaging equipment. Organised by Riyadh Exhibitions Company, the show will be held for the first time in the recently opened state-of-the-art Riyadh Exhibition Center from 13 to 16 Zul Al-Qi`dah, 1430 H / November 1 to 4, 2009. The new international exhibition complex will significantly expand the scope of the annual event via its 15,000 square meters of indoor exhibition space and 5,000 square meters of outdoor area.

Running simultaneously with Saudi Agro-Food 2009 is Saudi Agriculture 2009, the 28th International agriculture, water and agri-industry show. Saudi Agriculture has been serving as a major entry point for regional and international exhibitors and manufacturers into Saudi Arabia’s burgeoning agricultural market since its inception in 1981.
