Sheikh Hazza bin Al Nahyan opens 1st International Pain Management Conference in Al Ain

October 28, 2009
Country: UAE
Client(s): Tawam Hospital

Under the patronage of Shiekh Tahnoon Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan and the presence of Sheikh Hazza Bin Tahnoon Bin Mohammad Al Nahyan, Tawam Hospital commenced the 1st International Pain Management Conference at the Al Ain Intercontinental Hotel. The two-day conference is an initiative to raise the standards of pain care in the region and an opportunity for worldwide renowned medical professionals to present the latest advances in pain management therapies.

Tawam Hospital, in affiliation with John Hopkins Medicine, organized this conference to present a global forum for all healthcare professionals involved in pain management to learn from renowned scientists, researchers and academics in the field.  Tawam is managed by Johns Hopkins Medicine International and is owned and operated by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Tawam Hospital’s multidisciplinary comprehensive pain management committee organized the conference to take an in-depth look at and review of the most recent development in all areas and disciplines in the field of pain medicine and the steps needed to make resources available to patients. The program consists of educational sessions that will be conducted at the hotel as well as exhibits and demonstrations on new interventional and medical techniques for the management of pain at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science.

“Pain management is a vital component of any therapeutic process and continues to present new challenges. For the first time, leading scientists, researchers, academics and professionals from the across the globe have come together to present new developments and share therapies that will help improve the quality and efficacy of pain management across the region.“ said Tawam Hospital’s CEO, Michael E. Heindel.

The program offers a comprehensive look into all types of pain such acute pain, cancer pain, palliative care and chronic non-malignant pain and is phase one of a long-term plan designed to improve the longevity, function and quality of life for all patients with chronic pain.

Dr. Rasha S. Jabri, Division Head of the Pain Medicine Section at the Anesthesiology Department at Tawam Hospital and the Chairman of the Comprehensive Pain Management Program at Tawam Hospital, said, “The programs and sessions conducted throughout this conference will help healthcare professionals benefit from therapies and technologies available from all over the world to gain a better understanding of pain, one of the most common symptoms presented to physicians. Our aim is to dispel the fears and limitations created by pain and provide clear and effective solutions that can enhance medical services and ease patients’ suffering.”

Effective pain management calls for a range of holistic, pharmacological and topical or a combination of therapies for specific types of pain. It incorporates several practices that include interventional procedures, medication management, physical therapy or chiropractic therapy, psychological counseling and support, acupuncture and other alternative therapies, as well as referral to other medical specialists.

Speaking at the conference was Dr. Michael R. Clark, an Associate Professor at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, “Pain management is complex and often needs long-term treatment plans. Our responsibilities don’t stop at curing diseases but ensuring aftercare and recovery remains pain free and sometimes this can be very challenging. It is important that physicians considered a multidisciplinary approach. During the conference, we will review pharmacologic options and interventional techniques in pain treatment, as well as new technologies in the field that can facilitate pain care.”
