Hundreds of Gulf Air staff to stage sit-in

DUBAI - Hundreds of Gulf Air staff will stage a sit-in protest at the Bahraini carrier’s offices near the country's international airport on Thursday demanding better conditions of work, the local Gulf Daily News reported.

The hour-long protest has been organised by the Gulf Air Trade Union, which represents 1,400 of the company’s 5,000 workers, the newspaper reported.

The union’s demands include better work hours and pay, recruitment and termination processes, according to the paper.

The loss-making airline is undergoing a restructuring under its new CEO Samer Majali, who wants to cut costs and open new routes to "commercialise the airline as soon as possible".

Though the state-owned airline has frozen recruitment and salaries, it was still selectively hiring and increasing pay for senior management, the union alleged.
