The officer didn't attack civilians but he skilled soldiers who are killing his own civilian people.

If somebody alone would have killed 13 mojahedeed in Afghanistan - he would be an American hero. If you want to be safe - stop murdering other people. Even a mouse when in a corner starts biting.

The real blame for this tragedy lies with his superior officers who assigned him to counselling traumatised soldiers returning from Iraq, without monitoring his own wellbeing and lending support to him as was his right as a member of the armed forces.

His impending assignment to Afghanistan had left him clearly with profound doubts which he should have made clear to his superiors and which they in turn should have taken seriously.

Soldiers must generally obey orders, but they also have a right to be heard, and clearly he was not given that right. Had he been able to unburden himself, perhaps he would not have gone mad and shot people dead.

The fact that he is a Muslim is of inescapable relevance to the story, as he was evidently a religious man who failed to adhere to the tenets of his religion.

That he apparently spoke the words "Allahu Akbar" will have done nothing but suggest the religious motivation he felt at the time.

As per his Job as psychiatrist and specialist in combat stress, he was treating the soldiers who came back from US wars in the world, of course as a human when he was hearing the stories and what the soldiers were doing during the war he got this hysteriain action and he killed these people, I think he was overloaded with killing stories, which no human being can bear it!.

To: Sarath; Do you have any single proof says that this army officer killed these people for the name of Islam? Just because the topic says a Muslim officer you immediately get in your mind its a Muslim attack, You need to educate yourself about this religion, once you understand it you would know that such actions is not reflecting the religion, we hear allot of stories that non-Muslims kills each other, doesn't mean its reflecting their beliefs or religions. FYI, Islam is not a new religion as people thinks its just a completion to the past religions the Christianity & Jews, so attacking Islam means attacking all religions.

Thanks so much for editing my comment and banning quite a bit of what I also said. Thank God there is such a thing as freedom of speech in my country!

Editor's reply: Actually I think in your country it is illegal to incite hatred, which supercedes freedom of speech. We only removed the hate part.

Apparently none of you get it, it was the fact that this man murdered 13 of his fellow soldiers in the name of Islam. An officer who should have counselled not murdered - a so called doctor who had no business in the army if he felt strongly against the very army he swore to defend, a country he swore to protect since 9/11. He shouldn't have joined or did he have a hidden agenda?

You don't see Christians or Jews murdering in the name of their religion. We didn't ask for this or 9/11 yet we got it, and you say we are not allowed to defend ourselves against you?

Ass'salaamu Alai'koom,

My persoanl opinion is that may be our brother Nidal is just being made a scapegoat to malign the religion of peace. Islam never teaches killing any anyone, no muslim has ever killed anyone. Muslims are peace loving people. May Allah (SWT) give strength and power to brother Nidal to face the ordeal.

It's a pity to see such a headline, especially in the Middle East. Are you picking up the bad habits of the American media? I suppose that Major Nidal's actions are most probably a result of severe depression caused by counseling "thousands of war weary troops" as well as bullying by his fellow colleagues because of his faith.

This case is special because he killed in the name of Islam- not for money or anything else.
