Two women arrested for driving in Saudi

DUBAI - Police have arrested two female professors in Jeddah for violating Saudi Arabia’s strict ban on women driving, the daily Saudi Gazette reported on Saturday.

The women, whose nationalities have not been released, were on their way to a shopping mall when they were stopped by police, the newspaper reported.

The arrests come amid increasing reports of women driving - considered by clerics as un-Islamic.

Women's rights campaigners last year petitioned King Abdullah urging him to lift the ban.

Women in the conservative Muslim kingdom are legally obliged to cover up from head to toe in public, and cannot travel without written permission from a male guardian.

Is it legal to drive with out a driving license in any country?

If KSA doesn't issue licenses to women, was it legal for them to drive in the first place? The law enforcement have acted appropriately in this case.

Now the question of why no license to women is up to the country's administration and the people there.
As the true old saying goes, Live the law of land. While every one's input is welcome, there is no point in any one imposing their views on another culture.

Seriously people, you need to stop living in the stone age. When are your men ever going to stop being intimidated by women's rights? Why do you fear us; probably because we are the only people to have a brain in our head and you fear women will only outdo you and make you look stupid!

Ass'salamu Alai'kooom,

This is a very sensitive issue. I have lived in Saudi Arabia (the country where our glorious religion ISLAM was born). Firstly, I can say that the traffic conditions on Saudi roads are very bad, female drivers shall have real problems steering the huge American fuel-guzzlers on Riyadh or Jeddah streets. Secondly, it will be difficult for a lady to follow our prescribed dress code and drive a vehicle with comfort.

Jazahkallah Khair
