Bahrain's telecoms wachdog director quits

DUBAI -- Alan Horne, the head of Bahrain's telecoms regulator, or TRA, is to step down at the end of the month, the industry watchdog said Saturday.

"The General Director of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Bahrain Mr. Alan Horne has decided to step down from his position by the end of this month," the regulator said in a statement, without giving a reason for his departure.

Horne has held the post for three years.

A TRA spokesman told Zawya Dow Jones that Horne's contract was due to finish at the end of the November.

"He was appointed for a term of three years. His contract [now] expires," the spokesman said, adding that the position of general director can only be held for a maximum of six years.

A replacement is likely to be named in the next 'few weeks', the spokesman said without giving more details.

The TRA was set up in 2002 to work with government, operators, consumers and investors to boost transparency in Bahrain's telecoms sector.
