DUBAI - A huge fire at a labour camp in Abu Dhabi has completely destroyed two buildings that used to house some 500 workers, UAE daily the National reported on Sunday. The blaze broke out on Saturday around midday when most labourers were at work, the newspaper reported.
Those in the accommodation at the time of the fire were evacuated safely and there were no injuries reported, the paper said.
The camp is located on Reem Island, the site of several major construction projects, the paper said.
The camp is managed by Abu Dhabi Land and the labourers work for contractors of Tamouh Investments, one of the major developers on the island, according to the National.
The incident comes less than a month after rescue helicopters had to lift construction workers from the top of a 52-storey building on Reem Island after a fire broke out below.
