Dana Gas is sponsoring the 12th Annual Middle East Gas Summit (MEGAS) in Doha, Qatar on 5th & 6th of March, one of the region's most dynamic energy events, this year entitled ‘Gas in a Changing World’. MEGAS features a high profile line-up of the industry's most respected experts and Dana Gas PJSC, is supporting the summit as the Platinum Sponsor and was proud to contribute its vision of an industry where natural gas emerges as the defining energy source of the 21st century at the start of the two-day summit.
The Keynote Opening Address was delivered by HE Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah, Qatar’s Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry, in which he highlighted Qatar’s growing role in the global natural gas exports through LNG. This was followed by the private sector keynote address, given by Hamid D. Jafar, Executive Chairman of Dana Gas, in which he spoke about the important position of the Middle East in the global gas market, soaring regional gas demand, and the import role to be played by the local private sector.
“In the Gulf countries alone, natural gas demand has doubled over the past decade, driven by growing economies and populations, rapid urbanisation, and surging industrial development,” said Hamid D. Jafar, Executive Chairman, Dana Gas. “As a publicly-listed company launched from the Region, by the Region, and for the Region, Dana Gas has a natural long-term commitment to the region’s economies and the growth of this important sector. With our core presence and identity here in the Gulf, we view our geographical area of activities as spanning from Morocco in the west, to South Asia in the east, and including all activities of the natural gas industry.”
In his speech, Dana Gas’ Executive Chairman also highlighted the important role to be played by the region’s private sector in achieving its economic potential and in the important objective of job creation in the region: “In total, the Arab world will have to create 100 million new jobs in the next 20 years – more than we have achieved in the whole of the last century. It is simply not feasible for this increase in the labour force to be absorbed by the State Sector, and a robust and growing private sector is therefore critical to the region’s socio-economic well-being and global competitiveness.”
A comprehensive programme of speeches, meetings, and workshops at MEGAS are focusing on a dynamic sector that is currently experiencing phenomenal growth with required investments of US$180 billion forecasted for the Middle East Region in the next five years. The summit is also featuring numerous country-focused sessions with papers delivered by industry experts and senior representatives from international energy companies.
Dana Gas is also the main sponsor of the Gas Arabia 2007 Conference, from 5th – 7th March in Abu Dhabi, UAE which is providing another opportunity for dialogue and information exchange on latest developments in the Arab world’s gas industry. “Executive speaker panels are covering the whole value chain from upstream gas exploration and production, transportation and distribution challenges, through to downstream gas processing and associated technologies, so it is vital we also have a presence at this key event,” said Rashid Al Jarwan, General Manager, Dana Gas.
Dana Gas’ recent acquisition of Centurion Energy makes the Company the sixth largest gas producer in Egypt, providing it with access to a team of over 150 highly skilled multidisciplinary management and technical staff, with a proven track record in finding, developing, and producing natural gas reserves in the Middle East region. Dana Gas aims to build upon this strategic entry into the gas upstream business with further investments in gas exploration and production in the Middle East and North Africa region.
