The Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group will host the 2008 Congress of CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation, in Dubai. This the first time ever that a CIBJO Congress is being held in the emirate. An international alliance of national jewellery trade organizations formed in 1926, CIBJO aims to encourage harmonisation, promote international cooperation in the jewellery industry and to consider issues which concern the trade worldwide.

“CIBJO’s decision to hold its next annual Congress in Dubai is a landmark achievement for UAE’s jewellery industry,” remarked Tawhid Abdullah, Managing Director, Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group.

“This will further establish Dubai’s status as the Jewellery Destination of the World and give us the opportunity to strengthen our campaign for a unified jewellery marketing effort to promote jewellery as a single category. We raised the importance of committing to this initiative at the recently concluded CIBJO Congress in Cape Town and will be presenting action plans towards achieving this at the annual Dubai City of Gold Conference in April this year. We hope that the 2008 Congress will take a more concrete initiative to make a unified industry marketing effort a reality.”

The 2007 CIBJO Congress in Cape Town was attended by a delegation representing Dubai’s jewellery industry lead by Tawhid Abdullah and Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chief Executive Officer of the Dubai Multi-Commodities Centre.

Tawhid Abduallh was one of the key note speakers at the event and he presented a forward looking growth strategy for the global jewellery industry for the next 10 years. He also highlighted the immense potential of mutual cooperation between South Africa and UAE with the formers role as a leading mineral resource producing country and UAE’s status as a major consuming market.

A special committee was appointed at the Congress to examine CIBJO’s structure and system of governance and liaise with CIBJO members and other experts to prepare a proposal that will be presented for discussion at the 2008 CIBJO Congress.

At the flag passing ceremony at the end of the 2007 CIBJO Congress, Gaetano Cavalieri, President of CIBJO and Abbey Chikane, Chairman of the Jewellery Council of South Africa, passed on the flag to Tawhid Abdullah and Ahmed Bin Sulayem as a symbolic gesture confirming CIBJO’s decision to hold its 2008 Congress in Dubai.
