South Korea's Hynix Semiconductor Inc. on Friday said it had signed a deal to purchase land in Cheongju, an apparent move to build a multi-billion-dollar plant in the country's central city."We are considering building a plant in Cheongju seriously," the company said in a statement. It did not reveal details other than the land purchase deal which is reportedly worth more than 32 million dollars. Hynix, one of the top world chipmakers, had wanted to build a new plant in Icheon, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of Seoul, but the government in January rejected the plan, citing environmental concerns. Yonhap news agency said Hynix plans to invest a total of six trillion won (6.4 billion dollars) to build a new plant in Cheongju, 137 kilometres (86 miles) south of Seoul. The new plant, which will be completed as early as in April next year, will create more than 2,000 new jobs and its annual exports will be three billion dollars, Yonhap said.In 2006, Hynix's net profit rose 10.7 percent to 2.01 trillion won (2.1 billion dollars), with sales topping 7.57 trillion won (8.0 billion dollars).
