Aggreko plc, global leader in providing temporary power generation and temperature control services, has been supplying power during the crucial construction and commissioning phases of the Sakhalin Energy Investment Co (SEIC) Piltun PA-B platform since February 2006. The 33,000-ton platform, built by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), is now ready to mobilise to its offshore destination and Aggreko will continue to provide power whist the platform is in transit and for the initial period on location.

In late 2006, the initial 12-month contract with SHI was extended to June 2007 and an additional 30MW, 6kV loadbank was incorporated into the turnkey package. The Resistive Reactive loadbank package has been utilised to test the two onboard turbines that will be fundamental to the operational success of the platform once on location. This has enabled the SHI and Sakhalin Energy teams to thoroughly test the turbines prior to sail-away and ensure they will perform to capacity once off-shore.

Off-shore Sakhalin provides a challenging environment with temperatures during the winter months likely to fall below -30C. Aggreko designed the solution with an integral ‘winterisation’ package to ensure continuous and secure power throughout the coldest months. A fire and gas detection and suppression system was also incorporated into the package by Aggreko.

“Aggreko’s technical design team exhibited a comprehensive understanding of the various challenges involved, in particular the extreme weather conditions anticipated offshore. The 24 hour on site service and maintenance crews have ensured that the equipment has operated at peak performance throughout the contract.” said Mr. JC Kim, Project Director, Samsung Heavy Industries.

This is the second occasion on the Sakhalin II project that Samsung Heavy Industries have partnered with Aggreko. In 2005 Aggreko provided power for the 26,000 ton LUN-A platform, presently offshore Sakhalin.
